Police to enforce helmet law

The Omaha Police Department has received grant money to enforce Nebraska’s motorcycle helmet law.

Helmet compliance enforcement will begin in the Omaha area as soon as May 1^st. I spoke with the officer in charge of the “Traffic Safety Enforcement Unit” at the OPD. He indicated that they had made application although the approval for the grant had not made it back to his desk yet. I checked with the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety and they do have the application and anticipate it being approved and sent back. She was not able to tell me when. She did say it would happen soon.

 

As a reminder, throughout the summer months, offices will be setting up in “high motorcycle traffic areas” looking for folks either not wearing a helmet or wearing what “appears” to be a non D.O.T. compliant one. They will stop you and require you to produces an acceptable helmet before you can proceed. It will also come with a fine.
